What happens if you eat a Pine Cone? Husk and all?

Because a friend is saying that when she was little, she was able to gnaw off a bite of the pine-cone, swallow it, and lived through it. Wouldn't it kill you? (And she wasn't talking about the insides like what Squirrels eat. She means as it is off the tree.)
